The Convent of Tomar was originally conceived as a monument of Reconquest. However, after the Manueline period, the convent became the Portuguese symbol of opening up to external civilizations.

In the Second half of the 12th century, the Templar Knights was called to Portugal where they assisted in the mission to reconquer it. Their first fortress in this endeavor became Tomar. In the 14th century, the Order of the Templar Knights was abolished and in its stead, the Knights of the Order of Christ was established. This did not however lead to loss of importance of Tomar. In the centuries, it has seen several embellishments that have made it the most important monument in Portugal.

The original church at the Convent of Tomar was constructed at the end of the 12th century. It was built by the first Master of the Templars, Gualdim Pais on a polygonal ground plan. The plan had 16 bays, and an octagonal choir with ambulatory. It is an outstanding example of a Templar architecture that is still extant in Europe.

Several cloisters were added at different periods. The cemetery was constructed to the north east of rotunda in 1430 by Infante Don Henrique. He employed the pointed arches of sober elegance associated with Gothic Style.

The Manueline influence on the convent is evident. It is under King Manuel that Diego de Arruda was commissioned to create the choir that was based on a square plan. Other noticeable features of the convent include the 2 bays that mark the 2-storey building as well as a window and an oculus. The fact that the convent combines the Manueline, Gothic and Moorish influences so comfortably makes it one of the most revered convents in Portugal.

The other cloisters and a monastic building were added to the convent ensemble by Joao III. Whichever kind of ancient Portuguese architectural and interior decoration style you might looking for, you will get it at the Tomar Convent.
